Fairtrade Fortnight starts today!

 

The FairTrade 'treasure hunt' starts today - around Cowbridge looking for FairTrade products sold in participating shops! There are lots of great prizes up for grabs - there is a display of prizes in the reception area at lunchtimes. The treasure hunt forms can be picked up at reception or the Living Coffee cafe in Town.

The 27th of February to the 6th of March marks the annual FairTrade fortnight. The FairTrade group in Cowbridge Comprehensive School has collaborated with the Cowbridge Town Fair Trade group and have organised a series of events. Art club pupils from the school have collected FairTrade wrappers and have assembled a FairTrade footprint collage, which will be on display throughout the fortnight.

FairTrade Treasure Hunt
During the fortnight there's a FairTrade treasure hunt taking place in Cowbridge, designed by the pupils. There are twelve local shops taking part and thanks to their generosity a fabulous set of prizes, worth over £200, are up for grabs. Forms are available from the school reception and the Living Café. Using the clues participants must guess what FairTrade item is being sold in each shop. All entries with a complete set of correct answers will be entered into the prize draw for a chance to win prizes donated by the shops that are involved.

A presentation will take place at 2:30 pm on Saturday March 9th. The Mayor and Headteacher Mrs. D. Thomas will be attending and will give out prizes to the six winners. Good luck, Pob lwc, to all and have fun taking a step in FairTrade fortnight.

'Don't Be A Waster, Be A Saver'



This was the winning slogan in the the Eco-Code competition and it will be displayed throughout the school on a poster designed by George Williams. The Eco-Committee thoroughly enjoyed judging the competition in our meeting and there were so many great entries we have created a page on this blog for everyone to see the entries - to take a look, click on the tab 'Eco-Code Competiton Entries' at the top of the webpage.

Climate Change Lectures

On Wednesday 20th February pupils from years 10, 11, 12 and 13 had the opportunity to listen to a  series of lectures and experiments on climate change. These were delivered by Cardiff University’s School of Earth and Ocean Sciences.

Professor Ian Hall

The aim of the sessions was to broaden the students' understanding of climate change and give them a flavour of what they can expect if they study Earth Sciences at university.

Leading the lectures was Professor Ian Hall, a prominent scientist at the forefront of research into climate change and Deputy Head of the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences. During his talks he discussed the evidence to show climate change was taking place, the effects that climate change would have and finally how we can either adapt or mitigate to deal with the problems of climate change.

 

The feedback from the students was very positive and they all commented on how interesting the lectures were. In the future the school hopes to take further advantage of our links with Cardiff University especially in the field of sustainable development.

 

We would like to thank Professor Hall and his team for generously giving up their time to come into school and Dr Jeanette Reis for helping to make the day possible.

Growing Greenhouse

The Eco-Action Club, Year 13 Biologists and plenty of volunteers worked together to build sections of a greenhouse. They used the bottles collected by the school and a lot of help from Sam Anthony and Phil from Aberthaw Power Station as well as Dr Stacey, Miss White and Mrs Ellis.

We managed to build the roof and two sides of the greenhouse but we now need to collect more bottles to finish it.

Please bring in any 2L plastic bottles (clear ones preferably) and place them in the black wheelie bins outside the ground floor entrance of A Block.

Eco-Code Competition Winner

Congratulations to George Williams from 7.8 for his winning Eco-Code. He has won a box of chocolates to be shared with his form and his winning poster will be displayed around the school.

The Eco-Code will be adopted by the whole school to encourage pupils and staff to be more eco-friendly and not be wasteful with electricity, gas, water and fuel.

 

Congratulations also to to Sam Bell, Josh Armytage and Luke Evans from 7.6 who came up with the slogan 'Don't be a waster, be a saver' which has been incorporated into the final Eco-Code. They and their form also win a box of chocolates.

 

The runners-up were Freya, Izzy, Emma, Ella and Layla from 7.1 and Imogen Marlor from 7.8 who wrote a poem.
